We believe that chiropractic can be a life-changing and life-enhancing experience for you.
The key, lies in your understanding of chiropractic. Many people mistakenly think that chiropractic is for aches and pains, and then never experience the true benefits of chiropractic for themselves and for their friends and loved ones. That is like having a cable-ready, 181-channel television and only using it as a plant stand.
We trust that the more you read and understand about chiropractic, the more life-changing attitudes you will develop. These attitudes will encourage you to receive care regularly, thereby increasing your overall health performance. All that is necessary for you to experience more out of life is a willingness to investigate new ideas. Understanding this handout and what chiropractic is about requires an open mind, not open to just anything, but to those principles and ideas that are reasonable to you and that make sense.
Welcome to chiropractic and to Balance Atlanta….a chiropractic place!
Understanding the Chiropractic Principle of Health
When one part of the body is not working properly, the entire body lacks health.
There is perhaps no more misunderstood philosophy than that of chiropractic. The public’s perception about what chiropractors can do ranges from treating musculoskeletal problems to curing any and all diseases. While it is true that people with a wide variety of conditions seek chiropractic care that does not mean that chiropractors are able to cure those conditions or any conditions.
Chiropractic is Based on Simple Principles
Lack of health has only one cause – a body that is not working properly. If your body is working properly, you are healthy. If it is not, you are sick. Either your body is working right or it is not. Either you are in a state of “ease” (health and a normal body function) or you are in a state of “disease” (lack of normal body function). While the medical field’s objective is to treat symptoms and make the patient feel better, the chiropractor’s objective is to find the reason the body is not working properly and make the necessary correction.
Your Amazing Body
The human body is an extraordinary organism. It can make living tissue out of the food that we eat for breakfast, and adrenaline, insulin, and thousands of other chemical substances out of the food we eat for lunch. We conclude that there is an organizing, coordinating principle within the body, which we refer to as the “innate intelligence” of the body. Wherever we see organization, we acknowledge the existence of intelligence. The human body is the most organized structure in the world, 25-30 quadrillion cells all working together. It is, therefore, reasonable to assume that there is intelligence within the body. Innate intelligence is what you are born knowing rather than what you learn after you are born. There is nothing you must do to teach your body to work. A healthy baby knows nothing about their kidneys. Their kidneys work just as effectively as those of the world’s greatest specialists. It is this innate intelligence that runs our bodies from the time we are conceived until the time we die. It is perfect and incapable of making an error. Why then do our bodies break down and work less than perfectly?
Your Innate Intelligence
The telephone enables us to communicate with someone within a few seconds. Our innate intelligence coordinates and controls the function of all our cells. The nervous system is made up of the brain, the spinal cord, and millions upon millions of fine wire, a thousand times thinner than a human hair that go to every organ, tissue, and cell. This communication system is a more sophisticated computer system than any ever designed and yet the brain is about the size of two fists held together. Man has always known about the importance of the nervous system and that any interference within it can cause malfunction and even death. Because of its importance, the nervous system is protected by bone. The brain is protected by the skull and the spinal cord by the vertebral column. When the bones of the vertebral column become misaligned or subluxated, they interfere with the function of the nervous system. As a result, the body will not function properly. The objective of the chiropractor then is to adjust the vertebrae into their proper position, taking the pressure off the nerves and allowing the life force to flow once again so that each part of the body can begin to work properly. The body has the capacity to heal itself and maintain itself in a healthy state, but only within the limitations of its matter.
The question as to what a chiropractor can cure still needs to be answered. The simple fact is that no chiropractor anywhere every cured anybody of anything! Healing is the creation of new living tissue to replace injured, dead, or sick cells. Only the body can heal itself because only the body can create living tissue. It is constantly replacing cells that wear out. A red blood cell, for example, lives about 120 days and then must be replaced. The cells of the skin have an even shorter life span. When cells die prematurely due to injury or disease, the body must repair itself by creating new cells to take the place of the injured or sick cells. Only a living body has that ability. No doctor ever healed nor cured anybody of anything! A body that is alive heals itself. That which is 100% alive heals itself 100%. That which is only 99% alive, because a subluxation is cutting off some of the life force, can only heal itself 99%. The job of the chiropractor is not to heal nor cure anything, but to open up the lines of communication so that the body can have better potential to heal itself. The body can cure itself of anything and everything. There is no disease known to man that the body cannot cure. There is no such thing as an incurable disease. There are incurable people. There are people many of whom eventually go to a chiropractor, who have passed the point in which their bodies are able to heal themselves. Every person, no matter what disease or condition they may have, cannot go beyond their body’s ability to heal itself. If the condition has caused so much damage that the body is past the limitations of healing itself, repair will not occur. A simple example would be a cut finger, which the body heals easily. However, the body is limited from growing a new finger when one has been lost. That is a limitation matter. The body is also limited by time. The creation of living tissue, whether in developing a fetus or in healing a diseased or damaged body, takes time and cannot be rushed.
Only that body can heal itself. The chiropractor’s sole responsibility is to correct vertebral subluxations so that the body has a great potential to heal itself, and maintain itself in a state of health.
3 Reasons You Should NOT Tell Your Chiropractor About Your Symptoms
It does not help his or her procedure of locating vertebral subluxations.
There is nothing he or she can do about your symptoms.
Symptoms are relative to the practice of medicine, not chiropractic
People are so used to going to a doctor and detailing their symptoms that they just naturally think they must tell their chiropractor. Actually, it is a practice common to more than the health field. We tell the auto mechanic what the car’s “symptoms” are.
We conclude that for someone to help us with a problem, they need to know what the symptoms are. Knowing those symptoms helps the medical doctor narrow the choice so that he or she will be more likely to come up with the correct diagnosis. But chiropractic is different. A chiropractor is not faced with the possibility of numerous diseases. Symptoms are not necessarily indicative of subluxations, and subluxations do not always cause symptoms. Either every one of the twenty-four segments of the spine is in its proper position or they are not they are subluxated. Those are the only two choices. You see, a subluxation is not a medical entity. That is why medical doctors do not take care of them and chiropractors do. As a professional, your chiropractor has to focus their attention on the vertebral subluxation. Subluxations decrease the ability of the human body to function as it was intended and to reach its full potential in health and every other area of life. As a human being and as someone who cares about your well-being, the chiropractor is not callous toward how you feel. Further, your chiropractor is concerned and wants to know about an injury or problem that would prevent him or her from adjusting your spine. Besides the correction of your subluxations, the chiropractor is extremely concerned that you understand the chiropractic objective: to enable your body to work at its fullest potential by removing nerve interference.
If, for example, you do not understand that the subluxation is not related to how you feel, you may unknowingly walk around for weeks, months, or even years with interference in the vital life force, and more importantly, not do anything about it. From a chiropractic standpoint, that would be tragic.
